STANFORD, Calif. -
This week's live Stanford TV, radio and webcast schedule listed below.
Baseball
Kenny Diekroeger enters the week with a 21-game hit streak following another perfect hitting week in which he caught Jonathan Kaskow for the team batting lead, with both at .362. Diekroeger’s streak is believed to be Stanford's fourth-longest since 1988, tying him with Brian Hall's from 2004, and is the 12th-longest current streak in the nation. Diekroeger's next target is Carlos Quentin (2003) at 26, and then Troy Paulsen (1988) at 28. Jeffrey Hammonds has the known school record of 37.
Men’s Golf
Stanford begins its quest for a ninth national title at the NCAA Central Regional, which gets underway Thursday at the Warren Golf Course in South Bend, Ind. The 54-hole event will conclude on Saturday. Joining Stanford in the regional field will be (in order of seeding) Florida, Florida State, Duke, LSU, North Carolina State, Iowa, Michigan, Northwestern, Indiana, Virginia Tech, Murray State, Detroit and St. Francis. The top five teams in each region will advance to the NCAA Championships, June 1-6 at the Honors Course in Chattanooga, Tenn.
Stanford claimed the 1942 NCAA title – the fourth in program history and its second straight under head coach Eddie Twiggs – at the South Bend (Ind.) Country Club. Sandy Tatum won the individual title.
Women’s Golf
Stanford begins play Tuesday at the NCAA Championships, held at the Country Club of Landfall in Wilmington, N.C. It will be the Cardinal’s first trip to the NCAA’s since 2007, when it finished fifth at LPGA International in Daytona Beach, Fla. The 72-hole event concludes Friday, with teams playing 18 holes each day. Stanford earned a spot in the field by virtue of its sixth-place finish at the NCAA West Regional, held at Stanford Golf Course, May 6-8. Hole-by-hole updates are available to Golfstat.com.
Lacrosse
The Cardinal suffered a tough loss at James Madison in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. Stanford led 7-4 at the half, but was outscored 5-1 in the second, falling 9-8. Despite the loss, it was a successful season for the Cardinal which set new heights for the program with 15 victories and a No. 8 national ranking.
Softball
Stanford ended the regular season on a high note, sweeping Oregon for its first Pac-10 series victory since April 10. Senior Alissa Haber concluded the weekend by becoming the Cardinal's all-time doubles leader, passing the record of Olympian Jessica Mendoza on Senior Day. The Cardinal begins the NCAA Tournament by hosting the Stanford Regional this weekend at Smith Family Stadium.
Men’s Tennis
With Sunday's 4-0 victory over Pepperdine in the second round of the NCAA Tournament, Stanford (20-5) has recorded back-to-back 20-victory seasons for the first time since 2002-03, after going 20-6 last year. Stanford will be facing a familiar opponent in the Round of 16, squaring off against UCLA for the second time. Stanford defeated UCLA 4-3 on April 3 in Los Angeles, jump-starting the Cardinal’s current nine-match winning streak. The teams also were scheduled to play Feb. 27 at Stanford, but the match was canceled due to rain.
Women’s Tennis
Stanford senior Lindsay Burdette and freshman sister Mallory will have a homecoming this weekend when the Jackson, Ga., natives play in front of family and friends during an NCAA Round of 16 match Thursday against Clemson in Athens, Ga. Stanford’s most recent trip to Georgia was in 2006 – Lindsay’s freshman season when the Cardinal reached the national semifinals. Older sister Erin, a four-time All-American from 2002-05, was a member of two NCAA championship teams (2004, 2005) that claimed the hardware when the event also was held in Athens.
Men’s Track and Field
Amaechi Morton shattered his own record in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 48.94 seconds, the No. 2 time in the NCAA this year and No. 14 on the 2010 world list. While it was a tremendous effort by Morton, it was only good enough for second place in the race as two-time defending NCAA champion Jeshua Anderson of Washington State ran 48.63 to win the Pac-10 title and earn the top time in the NCAA so far this year. Anderson sits at No. 8 on the world list.
Women’s Track and Field
Redshirt senior Jaynie Goodbody broke the 200-foot barrier in the hammer for the first time in her career, tossing 200-5. She was rewarded by winning the Pac-10 title in the event with her career-best throw.
Women’s Water Polo
Stanford finished second at the National Collegiate Championship in San Diego over the weekend, losing 10-9 to USC in the final. It’s the fifth national runner-up finish for the Cardinal in the 10-year history of the event.
