Eugene, Ore. - Four Stanford athletes competed on day three of the NCAA Outdoor Championships and four athletes came through with outstanding performances. Each of the Cardinal earned high finishes and All-America honors to continue a strong national meet for Stanford.
The Cardinal men were led by sophomore Amaechi Morton who placed third in the 400-meter hurdles. Morton was just off his personal best and school record with a time of 49.46 to trail Johnny Dutch of South Carolina who upset two-time defending champion Jeshua Anderson of Washington State who finished second. Morton earned six team points for Stanford with his third-place finish.
Also excelling for the Stanford men was JT Sullivan in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. Sullivan used a huge kick over the final 300 meters to move from the middle of the pack all the way to fourth place. His time of 8:42.97 was a personal best and fifth all-time at Stanford. The time moved Sullivan past assistant coach David Vidal on Stanford's all-time list by one tenth of a second. Sullivan also earned the first All-America honor of his career.
The women also had a pair of top performances led by Katerina Stefanidi in the pole vault. Stefanidi cleared 13-9 ¼ to finish in a tie for fourth. The Cardinal sophomore was just off her personal best, but earned 4.5 team points. Stefanidi cleared each of her first heights without a miss until reaching 14-1 ¼, which happens to be her personal best and school record. She failed in three attempts to match her top height and had to settle for a tie for fourth. It was the second All-America honor of the season and her career.
