La Quinta, Calif. - The Cardinal made a charge at The Prestige at PGA West after firing the low round of the day on Monday. Stanford shot a second-round score of 7-under-par 281 to climb into a tie with California for the overall lead.
Cal shot a round of 1-over-par 289 for the same two-day total of 1-under-par as Stanford. Washington climbed to third with a round of 2-under-par 286 and is five strokes off the overall lead.
The Cardinal got tremendous play across the board on Monday, but again it was a freshman leading the way. This time it was Shane Lebow, who carded a round of 4-under-par 68. Lebow climbed all the way from a tie for 71st to a tie for 28th with a two-day total of 5-over-par 149.
"Shane stepped up huge for us today," said head coach Conrad Ray. "It was also a better team effort as we had solid play across the board."
Two Cardinal players are in contention for the individual title after playing tremendous golf for a second straight day. Andrew Yun improved on a 70 yesterday with a 3-under-par 69 on Monday and is now 5-under-par for the tournament. Cameron Wilson was also under par for a second straight day, backing up his 66 with a 2-under-par 70. Wilson sits in second place two strokes off the lead, while Yun is tied for third, four strokes off the lead.
Charlie Hughes of Washington leads at 9-under-par after rounds of 69 and 66.
Rounding out the scoring for Stanford was Steve Ziegler who shot a round of 2-over-par 74. Ziegler is now at 9-over-par for the tournament and tied for 46th.
Steve Kearney is tied for 51st after a round of 4-over-par 76. He is 10-over-par for the tournament.
Playing as an individual, Graham Brockington is 80th after an 81 on Monday.
Tuesday's final round begins bright and early at 7:30 a.m. The Cardinal and Golden Bears will battle for the tournament title, but Washington and San Diego are also lurking.
"This course is a great test," said Ray. "Anything can happen tomorrow."
