Cardinal Win Women's Bryson; 12th at Danmark

REDWOOD SHORES, Calif. / NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Stanford women won the one-day Bryson Women's FJ Championship, while on the East Coast the Cardinal are in 12th place after the first of two days of the Danmark Trophy Regatta.

The Cardinal outdistanced the Women of Troy 47-to-63 to win their own Bryson event, tallying a best of 17 points in the B Division with Sally Mace as skipper. Eliza Richartz' A Division team had 30 points, the second-best divisional total.

The B Division won all but two races, finishing second and fifth as well for a division leading 17 points, outdistancing the seven team, and 12-race field.

On the East Coast after the first day of the Danmark Trophy, freshman Mateo Vargas and his crew of Rebecca King have sailed the B Division into fourth place with 43 points, but the A Division of Kevin Laube and Hayley Tobin and Kelly Ortel are in 17th of 20 teams with 98 points. Overall Stanford is 12th with 121 points among the 20 teams.

Vargas scored a first place finish in his second race in Connecticut, and was in the top-10 in four of six races. The A Divison was inconsistent on day one, finishing in the last two three times, but also in the top-10 another three times over the seven races.

The Bryson team races is on Sunday, while the Danmark Trophy concludes on Sunday as well.
