No. 5 Stanford Drops 9-6 Big Splash Decision To No. 1 California

Nov. 19, 2010

BERKELEY, Calif. - Fifth-ranked Stanford had its five-year Big Splash winning streak snapped Friday night as top-ranked California downed the Cardinal, 9-6, in Berkeley.

The loss for Stanford (13-7, 5-3 MPSF) means that the Cardinal will be either the third or fourth seed at next weekend's MPSF Tournament at Avery Aquatic Center. If USC loses to UC Irvine Saturday afternoon, then the Cardinal will be the third seed, while a USC win makes Stanford the fourth seed.

The MPSF Tournament will begin Friday, Nov. 26 at Avery Aquatic Center. Tickets are on sale and can be purchased by phone at 1-800-STANFORD or online at www.gostanford.com.

Senior Jeffrey Schwimer led the Cardinal with two goals Friday night. Additional goals were scored by Paul Rudolph, Peter Sefton, Jacob Smith and Sage Wright.

Defensively, goalie Brian Pingree made 10 saves in the contest.

California (21-2, 8-0 MPSF) got off to a 2-0 lead and kept the Cardinal off the scoreboard in the first period. In the second period, it was Stanford's turn to score twice, while the Cardinal defense limited the Golden Bears to just one goal, making for a 3-2 game at halftime.

Yet in the second half, the California offense got going once more, as the Golden Bears' trio of Ivan Rackov, Zach White and Luka Saponjic, who each scored twice on the night, helped California score three times in each of the last two periods.

The Cardinal could only manage a pair of goals in each frame, falling behind 6-4 after the third period and being unable to catch the Golden Bears over the final frame.
