IRVINE, Calif. - Stanford men's water polo got goals from six different players, including hat tricks from Paul Rudolph and Peter Sefton, in its season-opening 15-3 victory over Pomona-Pitzer at the UCI Invitational in Irvine.

Rudolph found the back of the cage five times in the victory, while Sefton scored three goals as Stanford (1-0) coasted to a 6-0 halftime lead and never looked back.

Alex Avery and Jacob Smith each scored twice, while senior Sage Wright also scored a pair of goals in his return to action after redshirting 2009. Sophomore Ryan Brown also tallied a goal in the victory.

Junior goalie Brian Pingree started and played the first half of the contest, making five saves while keeping a clean sheet over the opening 16 minutes. Redshirt freshman Hunter Ploch took over cage-minding duties at the start of the second half and stopped a shot.

The Cardinal scored three times in each of the first two periods to take the commanding 6-0 lead at the break. Pomona-Pitzer finally got on the board in the third period but Stanford would answer with five goals of its own in the frame to lead 11-1 heading into the final period.

Stanford would go on to outscore the Sagehens 4-2 in the final frame to account for the final score.

Stanford completes competitive action at the UCI Invitational Sunday morning with a 10:20 a.m. contest against Redlands.
