Ann Arbor, Mich. - Stanford earned a big dual meet victory on the road Saturday night, knocking off defending national champion Michigan, 351.250-346.200. The Cardinal had the higher score in five of the six events on the way to an impressive victory.
The Cardinal began the night on the pommel horse with its lowest score of the night. Stanford scored 54.800 in the only event that it did not top Michigan. Gabriel Alvarado led the Cardinal in his best event with a score of 14.500. The other top scores came from Chris Turner (13.950), Jason Stevens (13.350) and Abhinav Ramani (13.000).
Stanford then moved onto the floor exercise with a score of 59.600. After two events, the Cardinal still trailed by just over a point. Josh Dixon paced Stanford on the floor with a score of 15.700. Alex Buscaglia also scored in the 15's with a mark of 15.000. Rounding out the scorers were Ryan Lieberman and Paul Hichwa who each scored 14.450.
The Cardinal next went to the vault and took over a lead that it would not relinquish. Dixon and Tim Gentry scored 15.950 to lead Stanford to a score of 63.350. Buscaglia (15.800) and Ramani (15.640) added the other scoring totals to finish the rotation.
Gentry continued a strong meet by leading the Cardinal in the still rings with a score of 15.550. Overall, Stanford scored 60.500 as Jordan Nolff also scored over 15 with a score of 15.100. James Fosco (14.950) and Lieberman (14.900) completed the Stanford scoring.
Moving on to the horizontal bar, the Cardinal scored 56.900. Buscaglia did not have his best routine, but still scored 14.400 to lead Stanford in the event that he won the Pan-American title. Hichwa added a 14.300, while Gentry and Lieberman both scored 14.100 to complete the scoring.
Finishing up on the parallel bars, the Cardinal scored 56.100 in the event. Lieberman led the way with a score of 14.900 in the same event that he won an individual national title a year ago. Turner also fared well, scoring 13.800, while Dixon and Gentry had identical 13.700's.
The Cardinal will stay on the road next weekend for a pair of dual meets. First, the will face Illinois-Chicago and Illinois in a double-dual meet on Friday, March 4, before traveling to face Nebraska on Sunday, March 6.
