STANFORD, Calif.-- Stanford linebacker Shayne Skov and safety Delano Howell are on the initial watch list for the Lott IMPACT Award, given annually to the nation's top defensive player, both on and off the field.
The 2011 list of 42 (Lott’s uniform number) includes 19 defensive backs, 14 linebackers and nine defensive linemen. There are 11 players from the ACC, eight from the SEC, seven from the Big Ten, and six from the Pac-10 and Big 12.
Skov as a sophomore led the Cardinal in tackles with 84, 10.5 for a loss of 54 yards. He also had a team-best 7.5 sacks. He was an honorable mention All-Pac-10 pick in 2010 and 2009.
Howell, a second team All-Pac-10 selection, made 60 tackles, had five interceptions and 10 passes deflected. He will enter his senior season with 23 careers starts in the secondary the last two seasons.
A national voter panel, made up of more than 200 former collegiate stars, former college coaches, members of the media and both the Lott IMPACT Board of Directors and Board of Advisors, will select the four finalists who will be honored at the annual Lott IMPACT Trophy banquet Dec. 11 in Newport Beach.
IMPACT is an acronym for Integrity, Maturity, Performance, Academics, Community and Tenacity, characteristics that Ronnie Lott exhibited throughout his brilliant Hall of Fame career at both USC and in the National Football League.
