Stanford Has Strong Showing In Berkeley

Berkeley, Calif. - The Stanford track and field teams continued with the outdoor season at the Brutus Hamilton Invitational. The annual meet hosted by California served as tune-up for the Cardinal who will host the Payton Jordan Invitational next weekend.

Stanford was led by Amaechi Morton who won the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 49.69. The time was off his own school record, but ranks fourth in the country.

The Cardinal had a big group in the 100 meters with three making it through to the final. Mark Mueller (10.81), Tyrone McGraw (10.90) and Johnson Bademosi (10.95) each made it through, while McGraw and Bademosi ran the final each recording the same time. Colin Hepburn (10.96), Ryan Brown (11.21), Alex Lee (11.23) and Delano Howell (11.39) also competed in the event.

The group also competed in the 4x100-meter relay as two teams. The first team of McGraw, Mueller, Howell and Morton ran 41.65 to place second, while the team of Lee, Brown, Hepburn and Bademosi ran 41.71 to place third.

The Cardinal had just one entry in the middle distances and distances with most competing next weekend at the Payton Jordan Invitational. Spencer Castro ran the 800 meters in a career-best time if 1:51.42.

In the field, Aaron Konigsberg tossed the javelin 188-2, while Kevin Cardey (21-11 ¾) and Howell (21-0 ¾) competed in the long jump.

Friday, the men were led by Patton Jones, who took the title in the long jump. Jones leaped 21-3 ¼ to defeat the field. Colin Hester also competed in the event, leaping 20-0 ½.

Hester also doubled in the 100 meters, running a time of 11.29. He was joined in the sprints by Alfredo Corral who ran 22.37 in the 200 meters.

On the track, Stanford had a big group in the 1,500 meters, led by Kenny Krotzer who ran 3:53.20 to take fifth. Right behind Krotzer was Ryan Valdes in 3:53.32, while Travis Edwards finished in 3:53.82. Also running were Adam Thorne and Marco Bertolotti finishing with times of 3:59.04 and 3:59.49, respectively.

Leading the Cardinal women were the field event athletes with 1-2 finishes in a pair of events. Eda Karesin and Elizabeth Minoofar accomplished the feat in the javelin, while Katerina Stefanidi and Ellie McCardwell did it in the pole vault. Karesin won the event with a throw of 155-2, while Minoofar was second with a toss of 151-0. Stefanidi vaulted 14-4 for the win, while McCardwell cleared a career best of 13-7 ¾ to place second.

Also in the field were Karynn Dunn and Brittni Dixon-Smith in the long jump. Dunn leaped 19-6 ¼, while Dixon-Smith jumped 19-6. Arantxa King also made her season debut, competing unattached. King jumped 19-4 ¾.

The women looked good in the 100 meters with three moving onto the final. Kori Carter won the event with a time of 11.57, while Brittni Dixon-Smith (11.87) and Katie Nelms (12.02) ran in the prelims, but sat out the final to focus on other events.

Carter doubled back to win the 200 meters as well, running 24.01. Karynn Dunn also competed with a time of 25.45.

In the 100-meter hurdles, Nelms came back to finish as the top qualifier with a time of 13.79. Dunn also competed and made the final as well, running a time of 14.30. In the 400-meter hurdles, Kala Stepter placed third with a time of 1:02.48. In the open 400, Joy O'Hare ran a season-best of 55.80.

Friday, in the field, Adrienne Johnson competed in the long jump and placed third with a leap of 17-9 ¾.

In the middle distances, Sophia Ginez ran 4:44.33 in the 1,500, while Sophie Charlton ran 2:22.29 in the 800 meters.

The Cardinal will now focus its attention on the Payton Jordan Invitational, which will be May 1 at Cobb Track and Angell Field. The annual meet attracts some of the finest distance competition from around the nation and the world.
