STANFORD, Calif.-- Jake Stewart drove in four runs as No. 21-ranked Stanford (20-13) won its ninth midweek game of the season with a 9-5 win over visiting No. 20-ranked California (24-13) on Monday evening.
Zach Jones and Stephen Piscotty added two hits a piece as a part of a 13-hit attack. Each drove in runs.
Michael Theofanopoulos broke up the shutout with a three-run home run to right to make it 8-3 in the seventh.
Piscotty's two-run single in the first gave Stanford an early 2-0 lead, before an RBI single from Diekroeger in the third made it 3-0.
Stewart opened up the game in the fourth, with the first of two, two-run doubles, to make it 5-0.. Stewart's second double in the sixth made it 7-0, chasing Kevin Miller (5-3) from the game. Jones RBI single closed out the three-run sixth.
Miller gave up the first eight runs (seven earned) on 11 hits over 5.1 innings for the loss.
Mark Appel pitched a perfect first, before Brian Busick (1-0) followed with three shutout innings for the win. A.J. Vanegas followed with two more scoreless frames before Theofanopoulos' homer.
NOTES:Stanford moved back into the top-25, topping out at No. 21 in Baseball America this week... Stanford is at Saint Mary's on Tuesday at 3 p.m. And this weekend at Arizona State for three... this was the second of two midweek games between the Bay Area rivals. Stanford won the first meeting 3-2 on February 22... if allowed in Scrabble, Cal designated hitter Michael Theofanopoulos' last name would be 22 points.
