STANFORD, Calif. - Junior Sarah Hassman has been named to the Capital One Academic All-District VIII First Team, as announced today by the College Sports Information Directors of America. Hassman is one of the 11 spots on the first team and is now in the running to be a 2011 Academic All-American.
The academic all-district honor is the first of Hassman's career. The Cupertino, Calif., native is a human biology major at Stanford with a 3.41 GPA. She earned Pac-10 All-Academic honorable mention honors last season.
Hassman, a Pac-10 All-Freshmen Team selection in 2009, is having her most successful season-to-date. After hitting a combined .263 in her first two seasons, the junior has increased her average to .411 this year. She has already tied the school's single season stolen base record (31) and set a new record for runs scored in a game (5). She leads the team with 57 runs scored and is second with 60 hits, both single season highs.
Hassman joins Arizona State's Katelyn Boyd, California's Lindsey Ziegenhirt and Washington's Morgan Stuart as the four Pac-10 representatives on the first team. As a member of the first team, they will appear on the ballot for 2011 Academic All-America honors.
Hassman brings Stanford's Academic All-District selection count up to 13. Sarah Beeson, Missy Penna and Alissa Haber are the program's only Academic All-Americans to date, winning the awards in 2002, 2009 and 2010, respectively.
To be nominated, a student-athlete must be a starter or important reserve with at least a 3.30 cumulative grade point average and have reached sophomore athletic and academic standing.
