ZIONSVILLE, Ind. - Stanford's men's golf team shot an even par team score of 284 on Thursday and are in fourth place after one round of the NCAA Central Regional being held in Zionsville, Ind.
The Cardinal trail first round leader Illinois by seven shots, as the Illini crafted a 277 (-7) on the par-71, 7,025 Wolf Run Golf Club layout.
Alabama and Michigan are tied for second at 278 (-6) while Iowa rounds out the top five at 285 (+1).
The top five teams advance to the NCAA Championships, May 31-June 5 at the Karsten Creek Golf Course in Stillwater, Okla.
Senior Graham Brockington and junior David Chung carded two-under rounds of 69 and are tied for eighth place after the first 18 holes. Seven players are tied for the first round lead at three-under. A total of 24 players managed par or better on the Wolf Run layout today.
Starting on hole No. 10, Brockington birdied his first two holes and played even par on the backside, collecting three birdies to offset three bogeys.
Chung was one-under on his round after nine holes and picked up three more birdies on holes 10, 12 and 14 to dip to minus-four. However, he settled for a 69 after back-to-back bogeys on 17 and 18.
Senior Steve Ziegler is tied for 25th after an opening round 72 (+1). He had managed just one birdie and two bogeys to go along with 15 pars.
Andrew Yun birdied his first two holes of the day but played his last 16 holes five-over on his way to an opening round 74.
Sophomore Steven Kearney finished with a 75 on Thursday. He had a roller coaster front nine, making three birdies, one bogey and one double bogey and had four bogeys on the backside.
The Central Regional will continue tomorrow at the Wolf Run Golf Club. Stanford will tee off at 8:00 a.m. ET and will be paired with Tennessee and Iowa.
