TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - The 11th-ranked Stanford softball team was shut out, 10-0 in five innings, at No. 3 Alabama, Friday, in the second game of the Tuscaloosa Super Regional at Rhoads Stadium. The Cardinal falls to 42-16 overall, while the Crimson Tide improve to 50-9.
Sophomore pitcher Teagan Gerhart took the loss, falling to 26-12 on the season. Alabama's Kelsi Dunne earned the win, moving to 27-4.
Juniors Sarah Hassman and Ashley Hansen were the lone Cardinal players to register hits in the game, both coming in the fourth inning.
The Crimson Tide came out looking to revenge its first home loss of the year, posting two runs in the top of the first inning. Centerfielder Jennifer Fenton hit a line drive back at Gerhart for the first hit of the game. After stealing second, Fenton advanced to third on a wild pitch. Shortstop Whitney Larson belted a double to right centerfield to score Fenton. Larsen scored the second run of the inning on a passed ball by Stanford catcher Kelsey Gerhart.
Alabama added a run in the top of the second to take a 3-0 lead. Fenton hit an RBI double off the right centerfield wall to score lead-off hitter Kayla Braud from second.
The Cardinal continued to struggle as the Crimson Tide tacked on another run in the third. Pinch runner Keima Davis scored as catcher Kendall Dawson reached on a fielder's choice.
After a pitching change by Stanford brought in senior Ashley Chinn, Alabama posted two runs in the fourth and four in the fifth to put the run-rule into effect.
The Cardinal and the Crimson Tide will face off once more Friday evening for a chance to move on to the Women's College World Series in Oklahoma City, June 2-8.
