SEATTLE - Stanford men's rowing's I Eight and II Eight crews battled their way to strong runner-up finishes in their respective races Saturday at the Windermere Cup in Seattle.
The Cardinal I Eight finished its Windermere Cup race with a time of 5:55.7, behind Washington and ahead of third-place Cambridge (UK) University, which traveled from England to take part in the event.
"Stanford men's rowing represented extremely well today in front of thousands of crew enthusiasts in Seattle," said Stanford head coach Craig Amerkhanian. "In the featured event, the Windermere Cup, the Stanford varsity eight raced fierce against top-ranked Washington and sat five seconds down at the halfway point. Cambridge University trailed both crews entering the famed Montlake Cut. Washington shifted gears, our men fought and finished strong behind the Huskies but ahead of the crew from Cambridge."
Washington's top time was 5:43.2 while Cambridge cross the line third with a time of 6:02.5.
The Stanford II Eight raced for the Erickson Cascade Cup Saturday, finishing second to Washington in a four-boat race that also included Oregon State and Canada's University of Victoria.
The II Eight crossed the line in 6:14.4, three seconds faster than the Victoria crew and nearly nine seconds ahead of the Beaver boat. Washington won the cup with a time of 5:55.6.
"Our II Eight finished second to No. 1 Washington, outpacing the University of Victoria and Oregon State crews," Amerkhanian said.
"Our thanks to the University of Washington and Windermere Real Estate for providing a lifetime experience for our team," Amerkhanian continued. "We had a tremendous collegiate experience and are extremely grateful to our hosts."
The Stanford men return home to prepare for May 15's Pac-10 Championships at Lake Natoma.
