CASCADE LOCKS, Ore.-- Stanford closed out its season by finishing in 13th place at the coed national championships, an improvement of five spots from the year before.
Using primarily underclassmen, the finish was also the team's best ranking in three seasons, bettering an 18th place showing in 2010 and a 15th place finish in 2009.
The Cardinal finished with 307 points, tying with Rhode Island for 12th, but lost a head-to-head race with the Rams.
The B Division team of Kevin Laube and crew of Kelly Ortel and Hannah Burroughs finished with 149 points, 11th in their division after winning the 11th race and finishing in the top-11 of 18 boasts eight times in 14 races.
Mateo Vargas sailed the first seven races, before classmate Oliver Toole finished off the skippering of the two-person boat. The duo finished 15th in the division with 158 points. Toole and senior Hannah Burroughs finished off the A Division by finishing in the top-10 in each of Burroughs' final four races as a collegian.
The Pacific Coast Collegiate Sailing Conference champions across three divisions for the second-straight year featured four all-conference freshman skippers in Vargas and Laube in the coed division and Molly McKinney and Sally Mace in the women's race. Eliza Richarz, just a sophomore, earned All-PCCSC honors for the second time. The women finished in 14th place and the team racing had the Cardinal in eighth place in the three-boat, head-to-head, three-day round robin.
For the second-straight year, Stanford was one of eight programs with teams in all three national races.
