Lehigh Edges Stanford, 1-0

Sept. 11, 2011

Final Stats

STANFORD, Calif. - Despite outshooting Lehigh and controlling the majority of the possession, Stanford dropped to 1-4-0 with a 1-0 loss on Sunday afternoon at Cagan Stadium. The Cardinal conceded a first-half goal and could not find the equalizer, despite some good chances.

Stanford had some good chances in the first half, but could not convert. In the 30th minute, Alexander Binnie sent a cross into the box, but JJ Koval's header went just wide. Moments later, Binnie and Adam Jahn connected a perfect give and go, but the cross was just behind a streaking Jimmy Callinan.

Lehigh got on the board in the 41st minute when a loose ball bounced around in the box and eventually found the foot of Daniel Odenweider. Odenweider finished with one touch for the only goal of the game.

Just before the half, Stanford had another great chance as Grant Grafentin had a blast from 20 yards out that sailed just wide.

The Cardinal outshot Lehigh 8-6 in the half, but could not find the back of the net.

The second half saw even more chances for the Cardinal and it outshot the Mountain Hawks by a total of 12-5. Dersu Abolfathi had a shot from distance that was just wide, while Garrett Gunther had a couple shots saved by Lehigh goalkeeper Ciaran Nugent.

Despite its efforts, Stanford was unable to get the equalizer, however. The loss is the first at home this season.

Sunday's game was a part of the Cal Legacy Classic where Stanford finished third with a 1-1 record. Gunther and Jahn were named to the All-Tournament Team.

Stanford will be back at home on Saturday, Sept. 17, when it takes on San Francisco. The Cardinal knocked off USF 1-0 in one of the more exciting games of the season a year ago.
