LOS ANGELES - Stanford dropped a second straight Pac-12 road game, falling at No. 25 UCLA, 2-0, on Sunday afternoon at the North Athletic Field. The game was moved from Drake Stadium to the adjacent field. The loss drops Stanford to 3-6-1 and 0-2 in the Pac-12. The Bruins improved to 7-3-1 and 2-0 in the Pac-12 as they also defeated California over the weekend.
The two teams played an even first half with both sides taking six shots and Stanford holding a 2-0 edge on corners. The Cardinal took the game's first four shots, including one from Alexander Binnie that forced UCLA goalkeeper Brian Rowe to make the save.
In the 24th minute, Garrett Gunther nearly found the back of the net, but his shot hit the crossbar. It was followed by a corner with Adam Jahn getting a chance, but his shot went high.
UCLA began to take control in the second half with both of its goals coming early in the period. In the 53rd minute, Kelyn Rowe and Eder Arreola combined on a through ball that Ryan Hollingshead was able to finish at the near post. It was the first goal of the season for Hollingshead and turned out to be the game winner.
Seven minutes later, the Stanford defense committed a foul in the box, giving UCLA a penalty kick. Andy Rose beat Jason Dodson on the PK to give the Bruins the 2-0 lead.
Dodson was solid in net for Stanford, making seven saves, including six in the second half. UCLA outshot Stanford 9-2 in the second half.
The Cardinal will now return home for its first Pac-12 game at Laird Q. Cagan Stadium. Stanford will face Cal on Sunday, Sept. 9, at 6pm. The Golden Bears are also off to a 0-2 start in conference play having also lost to San Diego State and UCLA this weekend.
