STANFORD, Calif.-- In the first Pac-12 conference meet between Stanford and Utah, the Cardinal (2-0) prevailed over Utah (0-1) 180-112, with Sam Woodward winning the 50 free and 100 fly and Stephanie Phipps winning both diving events.
Woodward won the 50 free with a time of 23.25, .23 seconds ahead of teammate Betsy Webb and then later in the meet in the first exhibition swim, had the top time in th 100 fly (54.82) as Stanford won 14 of 16 events. Woodward was also a part of the winning 200 free relay squad.
Phipps swept the diving for the third-straight weekend, picking up the top score in the three-meter (279.78) and the one-meter (282.60) as the sophomore has yet to lose this season.
Freshman Mackenzie Stein picked up a win in the 500 free (5:03.28) and in the 200 IM, was leading teammate Andie Taylor until the third leg of the fly, finishing second (2:05.73) behind Taylor's time of 2;03.89. Taylor had won the 200 free earlier in the day (1:49.76).
Fellow freshman Maddy Schaefer opened up the competition by swimming the anchor leg of the 400 medley relay. Utah had taken an early lead before Felicia Lee over took Hannah Caron in the fly and Schaefer extended the lead and touched the wall at 3:45.79, four seconds ahead of the Utes (3:49.97). Lee later in the day won the 200 fly (2:00.64).
Kaia Simmons led three Cardinal in the 1000 free (10:24.97) as Stanford was undefeated over five freestyle events led by Woodward (50 free), Andi Murez (100 free), Taylor (200 free), Stein (500 free) and Simmons (1000 free).
