AUSTIN, Texas-- Stanford's Sam Woodward won the 100 fly, led off the winning 200 free relay, and also finished third in the 50 free on the first of three days at the Texas Invite on Thursday.
Maya DiRado was second in the 200 individual medley while Felicia Lee (100 fly) and Andie Taylor (500 free) were third in other events. The Cardinal are currently fourth with 237 points behind Texas (548), Arizona (434) and USC (426.5).
Woodward, part of the nation's fastest 200 free relay team in the country, opened up the invite trailing both Arizona and USC, before Andi Murez gained ground and passed the Women of Troy. Still trailing the Wildcats after the third leg, freshman Maddy Schaefer passed Sarah Denninghoff and touched the wall at 1:28.20 ahead of the Wildcat's time of 1:28.66.
Woodward two events later led the field in the 100 fly with a time of 52.06 after posting the top prelim time (52.08). Woodward, after trailing teammate Felicia Lee and UNLV's Katelyn Herrington after the first 50 yards, pulled ahead of both competitors over the final 25 yards to win ahead of Herrington (52.43) and Lee (52.63).
In a two-person race from the start, USC's Katinka Hosszu beat DiRado with a time of 1:52.71 as the Cardinal sophomore was second (1:54.66). In her second top-20 finish, sophomore Sara Giberson was 12th in the B Final with a time of 2:01.09. Giberson was also 20th in the 500 free after Allison Arnold won the C Final with a time of 4:46.68 for 17th overall.
Taylor finished third behind two Pac-12 foes in the 500 free, swimming 4:40.81 after Alyssa Anderson led from start to finish with a time of 4:36.78 followed by USC's Haley Anderson (4:38.73).
In the splash and dash, Woodward finished third with a time of 22.13 behind Arizona's Margo Geer (22.02). Schaefer (22.28) was fifth and Betsy Webb was sixth (22.30).
Stanford closed out the night fourth in the 400 medley relay.
