NASHVILLE, Tenn.-- Stanford freshman Kristian Ipsen and Troy Dumais won the 3-meter synchro winter national title on Saturday after scoring a mark of 883.44.
Crushing the field, Chris Colwill and Drew Livingston were second with 794.37 points. Stanford graduate Dwight Dumais and his brother Justin were fourth with a score of 774.36 after finishing second to Ipsen and Dumais in the quarterfinals earlier in the day.
In the finals, Ipsen and Dumais scored 9.0's or better on five of six dives, securing 10.0's on a back dive pike, a forward 3 1/2 somersault and a forward 2 1/2 somersault and twist. In the quarters, the duo had 8.5's or better on two of their first three dives, before hitting a majority of 7.5's or better over their final three dives.
Their best dive came on a forward 2 1/2 somersault pike, which gave them two 10.0's and 92.82 points in the finals, on a degree of difficulty of 3.4, their second toughest dive on the meet. They also showed improvement from the afternoon, for example, on their forward 3 1/2 somersault pike they went from 8.5's in the quarters to a 10.0, four 9.5's and five 9.0's in the finals.Their score also improved by seven points.
Ipsen and Dumais won the quarterfinals of the three-meter synchro with a mark of 421.74, while the Dumais brothers finished second with a score of 389.76.
In the finals, the two Dumais brothers secured a best of 79.56 on a forward 2 1/2 somersault twist with mostly 7.5's. They have 8.5's or better on their first four dives of the quarters.
Lillian Hinrichs, a 2012 Stanford freshman, finished 25th in the platform quarterfinals with a score of 248.35, as the top-18 advanced to the finals. Classmate Kelly Markle finished 29th in the quarterfinals of the 1-meter with a score of 212.05.
