STANFORD, Calif.-- Sam Gaviglio (7-1) out dueled Mark Appel (2-4) in a 1-0 Friday night showdown, as No. 9-ranked Oregon State (25-7, 6-1 Pac-10) allowed four hits in defeating host No. 17-ranked Stanford (16-10, 3-4 Pac-10) in the series opener.

Tony Bryant came on in the ninth and struck out the side for his fourth save.

Gaviglio struck out eight and walked one for the win, as OSU held on following a two-out, 0-2, RBI single by Kavin Keyes in the first.

Appel left after recording his sixth strikeout, a called strike three of Ryan Barnes with a runner on second in the seventh. Scott Snodgress got an inning ending ground out and then pitched the final two innings.

Appel went the first 6.2 innings, scattering seven hits and allowing just that single run.

Stanford had a chance to tie it in the fourth, loading the bases after catcher Parker Berberet dropped a third strike. Gaviglio though struck out Lonnie Kauppila to keep Stanford scoreless. Jake Stewart had a lead off double in the seventh, but was stranded following a strikeout and two groundouts.

NOTES: Saturday and Sunday's games are at 1 p.m...  third baseman Stephen Piscotty made two nice backhanded grabs by the third base bag to secure two outs in the top of the second...  Stanford Athletics' 100th NCAA Championship, won by men's gymnastics tonight, was acknowledged in the top of the seventh... it was the second-straight start Appel has allowed just a single run. His ERA on the year dipped to 2.86... it was the third one-run loss for Appel on the season... it was the first 1-0 game for the Cardinal since the 2007 season, a win.
