STANFORD, Calif.-- Zach Jones, Tyler Gaffney and Stephen Piscotty all homered as No. 26-ranked Stanford (18-12, 4-6 Pac-10) won the series opener, 7-4 over No. 11-ranked UCLA (20-13, 9-4 Pac-10) on Thursday evening.

Mark Appel (3-4) went the first seven innings, giving up three runs on nine hits with six strikeouts for the win.
Stanford took a 4-3 lead in the sixth with Brian Guymon's first collegiate RBI, before back-to-back home runs in the seventh made it 7-3.
Guymon, playing in his tenth collegiate game, came through with a two-out RBI single to give Stanford a 4-3 lead. Gaffney then chased Gerrit Cole (4-4) from the game an inning later with a two-run home run to left to make it 6-3.
Piscotty then welcomed Mitchell Beacom to the game, taking the righthander's first pitch to left to make it 7-3. Cole gave up a season-high six runs on nine hits over 6.1 innings.
Stanford pushed across three runs in the third, before UCLA tallied two in the third and another in the sixth to tie it at 3-3.
Jones got the Cardinal on the board in the second with a three-run, two-out home run to left to make it 3-0. Brian Ragira and Lonnie Kauppila both singled, before Jones connected on a 3-2 pitch from Cole for his third home run of the season.
After two runs cut the Cardinal lead to 3-2 in the third, Appel loaded the bases with a hit by pitch, before getting a strikeout and flyout to end the threat. Two bloop and one infield single with two outs in the sixth tied it at 3-3.
NOTES:Friday's game is at 5:30 p.m and the Saturday finale is at 1 p.m... Stanford hosts Cal on Monday and are at Saint Mary's next Tuesday, before traveling to Arizona State starting on Friday... according to scouts, Cole in 2011 and Appel in 2012 are two of the top arms in their respective drafts... entering the week, Stanford hadn't homered in its previous nine games, Kenny Diekroeger hit one on Tuesday and three were hit tonight.
