Cardinal Drop Series in Oregon

EUGENE, Ore.-- An error by shortstop Kenny Diekroeger allowed Brett Thomas to bat in the seventh, as Thomas' two-out RBI single led Oregon (26-24-1, 7-14 Pac-10) to the 6-5 series victory over No. 25-ranked Stanford (28-18, 10-11 Pac-10) on Sunday afternon.

Tyler Gaffney had three hits and two RBIs for the Cardinal.

Dean McArdle (7-3) took the loss in relief, giving up the unearned run in three relief innings, while Scott McGough (2-6) got the win with 1.2 shutout innings. Madison Boer got the save with a scoreless ninth. Stanford put the tying run on base, but Boer struck out Danny Diekroeger to win the series.

Stanford also tried to tie it in the eighth, but Dave Giuliani was thrown out at home, trying to score from second on a two-out base hit by Zach Jones on a throw from rightfielder Aaron Jones.

Stanford tied it in the seventh, when a wild pitch by McGough made it 5-5.

Both starters struggled. Jordan Pries pitched into the sixth, giving up the first five runs on eight hits, as Oregon took its second lead, at 5-4 off a Stefan Sabol sacrifice fly. Christian Jones gave up five of his own runs over 6.1 innings.

Gaffney manufactured his own run  in the fifth, tying the game at 4-4. He singled with two outs, stole second and then rounded third and scored on a two-base wild pitch after Oregon took a 4-3 lead in the fourth.

Brian Guymon got the Cardinal going in the third, as he ended up scoring the first of two runs to give Stanford a 3-1 lead. An RBI single by Gaffney, his second RBI of the day, made it 2-1, before a Stephen Piscotty sacrifice fly made it 3-1. Gaffney's sacrifice fly in the first made it 1-0.

NOTES: Stanford returns home to the Bay Area for its final eight regular season games, hosting USF Tuesday, Arizona next weekend, Cal Poly on May 24 and are at Cal on May 27 and 28... NCAA selections occur on Memorial Day, the first year amateur player's draft begins on June 6.
