STANFORD, Calif.-- Freshman Brett Michael Doran's two-out single off the left field wall gave No. 25-ranked Stanford (29-18, 11-11 Pac-10) a 1-0, 11th inning victory over No. 27-ranked Arizona (32-18, 11-11 Pac-10).
Bryce Bandilla (4-2) took the loss, loading the bases with two outs with a walk, hit by pitch and another walk, before reliever Matt Chafee came on to face the freshman. Tyler Gaffney scored the winning run following a two-out walk and steal.
Doran then took a 2-2 pitch into the gap for the winning run, in a game that featured the top two Pac-10 offenses, but saw just 11 combined hits.
Chris Reed (5-2) pitched a perfect three innings for the win.
Mark Appel went eight-plus scoreless innings, giving up his sixth single to lead off the ninth. Reed then came on for the next three outs, including the Wildcats' third bunt, stranding the fourth and final Wildcat in scoring position. Appel tied a career-high with nine strikeouts and one walk.
Arizona had a chance to take the lead in the eighth against the Stanford righthander. Appel put two runners on with one out, only to force Arizona into an inning ending double play.
Kurt Heyer countered with 10 strikeots over the first nine shutout innings, scattering four hits, as Stanford had its own chance in the seventh..
Brian Ragira had the only extra base hit, a double to lead off the seventh, but following a sacrifice bunt, two fly outs kept Stanford off the board.
Earlier in the game, Arizona had two chances to score in between eight in a row set down by Appel.
Seth Mejias-Brean was stranded at second in the sixth with back-to-back Appel strikeouts. Earlier in the game, in the third, Stephen Piscotty went to one knee at third base and saved a run with a fielder's choice and throw home. A caught stealing then ended the inning.
Stanford had three singles through the first six innings, none getting to second base against Heyer.
NOTES: Arizona came in batting .326, to lead the Pac-10, Stanford was hitting .306, second-best in the conference... Tyler Gaffney continued his hit streak to 12 games with a single in the first... Saturday and Sunday's games are both at 1 p.m... the regular season home finale is Tuesday when Cal Poly heads up the state to take on the Cardinal at 5:30 p.m... the regular season concludes at Cal on May 27 and 28... the national champion women's water polo team was honored prior to first pitch.
