GOLD RIVER, Calif. - The second-ranked Stanford Lightweights finished first and second at the 2011 Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association Championship Regatta on Lake Natoma.
Racing into a strong cross-headwind, the Stanford "A" eight took over the race early and powered down the course to an open-water victory over the Cardinal "B" boat, Washington State and UC San Diego. The Cardinal crossed the line in a winnign time of 7:12.6.
Stanford's "B" eight battled over the first quarter of the race with Washington State. In the second 500, Stanford moved out to an open-water advantage and held second place with a final time of 7:34.1.
Washington State (7:56.0) and UC San Diego (8:53.6) rounded out the field.
The conditions were nasty," commented Stanford lightweight rowing head coach Al Acosta. "I was glad to see our crews work hard the whole way down."
The Cardinal will return to Lake Natoma in two weeks for the PCRC regatta.
