STANFORD, Calif. - The No. 8 Stanford softball team split its double-header with Nevada, Saturday, on the second day of the Stanford Nike Invitational at Smith Family Stadium. The Cardinal dropped the first contest 11-3 in five innings, but bounced back to defeat the Wolfpack, 8-2, in game two. The Cardinal now stands at 7-3 overall, while the Wolfpack is 2-7.
Freshman pitcher Nyree White earned her first collegiate start in the circle in game one. She went 3.1 innings, giving up eight hits and seven earned runs with three strikeouts. White drops to 0-2 on the year. Second baseman Jenna Rich finished the game in the circle, throwing 1.2 innings. Nevada's Mallary Darby improved to 2-2 in the circle.
Nevada posted four runs in the top of the second. The Wolfpack scored its four runs on two hits, but stranded two runners on base. There were two fielder's choices in the inning, a walk and a hit by pitch.
Stanford got on the board in the bottom of the third inning. Rich hit a double to deep left centerfield to score freshman Leah White from first.
Nevada recorded a huge fourth inning to take an 11-1 lead in the game. The Wolfpack scored seven runs on six hits as the Cardinal committed two errors. Third baseman Chelsea Barilli hit a double and an RBI triple in the inning to lead Nevada.
The Cardinal registered two more runs in the bottom of the fifth, but it wasn't enough to avoid the run rule. Rich and designated player Tegan Schmidt recorded RBIs in the inning.
In the second game against the Wolfpack, Stanford took the early 1-0 lead after the first inning. Senior Sarah Hassman led off with a bunt single. After stealing second she advanced to third on a single up the middle by White. Hassman scored on a sacrifice fly by senior Ashley Hansen to left field.
Nevada loaded the bases in the second with two outs, but Gerhart caught third baseman Chelsea Barilli looking to end the inning without any damage done.
The Cardinal tacked on three runs in the second. Freshman Hanna Winter scored on a sacrifice fly by right fielder Caitlyn Pura. Hassman then ripped a triple to right center to score Jenna Becerra from second. Hassman scored the final run of the inning on an infield single by White.
Nevada avoided the shutout as first baseman Lauren Lastrapes hit a solo home run to left field in the top of the third.
Stanford tallied two runs in the fourth to take a 6-1 advantage. Hassman scored on a wild pitch, while White crossed the plate on an RBI single by Rich.
The Wolfpack scored its second run of the game in the top of the fifth, but the Cardinal answered in the bottom of the inning with two more runs. Right fielder Caitlyn Pura hit her first collegiate triple, which scored Becerra and catcher Michelle Prong.
The Cardinal will face Bradley at 10 a.m. PT in the championship game of the Stanford Nike Invitational. Nevada and Pacific will meet in the consolation game at 12:15 p.m. at Smith Family Stadium.
