FEDERAL WAY, Wash.-- Kristian Ipsen finished second in the 1-Meter, Chad La Tourette (500 free) and David Nolan (200 IM) were both third at the NCAA Championships as Stanford is in second place behind Cal after the first of three days.
Stanford with those three top-three finishes, tallied 140.0 points, behind Cal (157.5) and ahead of Texas (128.5) and Arizona (118.0).
Ipsen scored a 410.15 in the 1-Meter finals, hitting 75 points or better on four of his six dives. Texas' Drew Livingston scored a best of 448.10. The Stanford freshman closed out his night with a high of 84.00 on a reverse 1 1/2 somersault and 3 1/2 twist, one of the highest degree of difficulty dives by any of the eight divers, scoring four 8.0's. He was one of four divers over 400 points, eight points in front of third and fourth place.
Ipsen had closed to within nine points after round four with four 9.0's on a forward 3 1/2 somersault for 79.50 points. A slip on the fifth dive knocked him back. Ipsen opened up his night dive with four 8.5's from four of the seven judges for 75.00 points on a reverse 1 1/2 somersault.
Stanford opened up the individual portion of the championship with 34 points paced by La Tourette's bronze medal swim of 4:14.65 in the 500 free and Bobby Bollier's eighth place showing (4:22.80). Drew Cosgarea (13th) and David Mosko (14th) rounded out the top-15 for the Cardinal.
Nolan also took third, leading after the first 100 yards, before Cal's Marcin Tarczynksi took the final turn ahead of the pack. Tarczynksi finished with a time of 1:41.97, ahead of Florida's Marci Cieslak (1:42.26) and Nolan (1:42.85).
Nolan also opened up with the lead in the night's final event, the 400 medley relay, as the Cardinal ended up fourth. The 200 free relay team were fifth to open the night.
Aaron Wayne produced a fourth place finish for the Cardinal in the 50 free in the last individual swim of the night with a time of 19.47. Geoff Cheah, just missed the consolation round, finishing as the first alternate for the race, at 17th in the morning prelims.
NOTES: La Tourette's time of 4:13.92 tied David Mosko's time in 2010 for second all-time in the Stanford record books... Nolan was the top seed heading into the finals with a career-best time of 1:42.70... Ipsen was 10 points from his regular season career-high in the 1-Meter... Friday and Saturday the prelims start at 11 a.m. and the finals begin at 7 p.m.
