FEDERAL WAY, Wash.-- Freshman Kristian Ipsen became the first Stanford diver in 82 years to win an NCAA diving championship, winning the 3-Meter on Friday with a final score of 466.05. Classmate David Nolan was an NCAA runner-up in the 100 back as Stanford is in fourth place with one day to go.
Ipsen, the only freshman in an eight-man final that featured seven seniors, scored back-to-back marks of 90.1 to maintain the lead after four rounds. He tallied four 9.0's from the seven judges on a forward 2 1/2 somersault with two twists for his fourth dive following four 9.0's or above on an inward 3 1/2 somersault tuck. He closed out his night with 86.7 points.
"It really means a lot to me, especially after London, where I didn't do as well as I wanted to" said Ipsen, who had competed at the World Cup in London and missed the Pac-12 meet. "I was really tired after that experience, and competing at meet after meet, but I'm really happy (with the result tonight)."
The freshman scored four 9.5's on his second dive aforward 3 1/2 somersault to take the lead following 86.8 points. Ipsen had four 8.0's on his opening dive for score of 73.5 points. Ipsen was just three points shy of his season-best with a prelim score of 464.15.
Cal leads with 379.5 points, followed by Texas (343.5), Arizona (283.0) and Stanford (277.0).
Nolan and winner Cal's Tom Shields, next to each other in lane six and seven, were neck-and-neck throughout, as Shields touched the wall (44.86) ahead of the Stanford freshman (45.53). Nolan bolted out to the lead after the first 25 yards and maintained it at the halfway point before Shields took over the lead in a race that saw six swimmers separted by six-tenths of a second at the halfway point.
Stanford had two finalists in the 400 IM, as freshman Drew Cosgarea (sixth) and Matt Thompson (13th) earned All-America honors.
Two seniors earned individual All-America honors for the first time. Geoff Cheah, the first alternate in the 50 free last night, earned his first individual top-16 finish with a 15th place finish in the 100 fly (45.95) on Friday. Rob Andrews, a previous four-time relay All-American, also entered the individual honors with an eighth place showing in the 200 free (1:36.25).
Curtis Lovelace became a four-time All-American in the 100 breast with a tenth place finish (53.11).
Stanford opened up night two with a fifth place finish in the 200 medley relay (1:25.14), before closing out the night with a third place finish in the 800 free relay (6:19.19).
NOTES: 1930 1-Meter champion Ed Throndsen was the only other Stanford men's diving champion prior to tonight... Ipsen was the only freshman in today's 3-Meter competition and beat Drew Livingston by 11 points. Livingston had beaten Ipsen in the 1-Meter by 38 points last night... it was the second top-three finish for Nolan, who was third in the 200 IM on Friday... Bobby Bollier became the second swimmer in as many days to be the first alternate, finishing 17th in the 100 fly.... the prelims for Saturday start at 11 a.m. and the finals are at 7 p.m.
