No. 2 Stanford Picks Up 14-4 Win Over Long Beach State

March 3, 2012

STANFORD, Calif. - Six days after suffering its first setback of the 2012 campaign, second-ranked Stanford got back into the win column with a 14-4 victory over No. 19 Long Beach State Saturday afternoon at Avery Aquatic Center.

Stanford (12-1) closes out the weekend homestand Sunday against No. 7 UC Irvine. The opening sprint is set for 1 p.m.

Nine different players scored in Saturday's win, with four posting multi-goal games. Freshman Kiley Neushul posted a hat trick while fellow rookie Ashley Grossman added a pair of goals. Drivers Kaley Dodson and Alyssa Lo also scored twice in the win.

Cassie Churnside, Monica Coughlan, Alexis Lee, Kaitlyn Lo and Lexie Ross all added goals in the win.

Both Cardinal goalies received a healthy dose of action. Junior Kate Baldoni started the contest, making seven saves before being relieved by freshman Emily Dorst with just over five minutes to go in the third period and the Cardinal up 10-1. Dorst made eight saves in just over a period and a half of playing time.

The tone of Saturday's game was set when Stanford blitzed Long Beach State for five straight goals opening 8:26. Grossman beat 49ers goalie Kelly Ringle for the game's first goal at 5:47 of the first period, followed by goals a minute apart from Neushul at 4:24 and 3:24.

Coughlan made it 4-0 just 53 seconds after Neushul's second goal, capping a three-goal Stanford sequence over a span of 1:53.

Alyssa Lo fired her first goal home 26 seconds into the second frame, making it 5-0 in the Cardinal's favor. Long Beach State notched its first goal of the game 57 second into the frame off the arm of Julia Garyfallou, but Stanford answered with a 5-0 run to stamp out any 49er comeback hopes.

Three of those goals came in the first 2:43 of the second half. Dodson led a 3-on-1 and fired home 1:15 into the half, followed by goals from Alyssa Lo and Grossman just 17 seconds apart.

Following Grossman's goal with 5:17 left in the period, which made it 10-1 Stanford, Dorst was substituted into the game for Baldoni. The freshman from Menlo Park would stop eight shots the rest of the way, while on offense Lee, Churnside, Ross and Kaitlyn Lo would add the final four Cardinal goals.
