STANFORD, Calif.-- Garrett Hughes (1-0) gave up a single run in four hits as No. 5-ranked Stanford (21-7) picked up an 8-3 win over visiting Pacific (10-22) on Wednesday evening.
Kenny Diekroeger doubled twice and homered in four plate appearances, going 3-for-3 with two runs and a walk. Brian Ragira extended his hit streak to 13 games with a two-hit night.
Hughes went a career-best 5.0 innings, giving up an unearned run in the fourth, while stranding six Tiger base runners in the process.
UOP scored its first run when Hughes on a come backer, threw it into center field allowing the run to score from second with one out. He finished the fourth and then finished off his night with a scoreless fifth, walking his only batter of the game in the inning.
Like Monday, Stanford scored early, and often, leading 7-1 after five innings.
A two-out RBI double by Stephen Piscotty, followed by an RBI single by Ragira gave Stanford a 3-0 lead in the third.
A two-run double by Lonnie Kauppila, added to the lead in the fourth, before an RBI single by Tyler Gaffney made it 6-1. A solo homer by Diekroeger, his second of the season, made it 7-1 in the fifth.
NOTES: with the 19-6 win on Monday at Cal, Stanford has outscored opponents 27-9 in two midweek games... Garrett Hughes made his third career start, starting two games as a freshman two years ago... Sam Lindquist went a career-best 2.0 innings in relief... tonight's game was pushed back one day due to weather in the Peninsula... Stanford hosts No.10-ranked Oregon this weekend starting with a three-game series on Friday at 5:30 p.m. and continuing on Saturday at 1 p.m. and Sunday at noon.
