STANFORD, Calif.-- Brett Michael Doran, a mid-game replacement, drove in the first two runs and then scored the last two as No. 5-ranked Stanford (22-9, 5-7 Pac-12) salvaged the series finale with a 4-2 win over visiting No. 10-ranked Oregon (24-10, 10-5 Pac-12).
Doran entered the game in the second, with an 0-2 count after shortstop Lonnie Kauppila could not continue after a first inning collision behind second base. After taking a ball in the dirt, Doran pushed a single through the left side on a 1-2 pitch and gave Stanford a 2-0 lead in the second. It was his first hit of the season and second and third career RBI.
Doran added two walks and two runs to make a winner out of A.J. Vanegas (2-0), who went the first 5.2 innings, giving up two runs (one earned on two hits). David Schmidt then saved it with 3.1 scoreless innings for his third save of the year.
The win was Mark Marquess' 1444th career victory, tying him with Chuck Hartman (1960-2006) for No. 5 all-time among Division-I coaches.
Doran's smart base running kept the Cardinal on top, after Stanford dropped the first two games of the series.
Doran made it 3-1 in the fifth, by taking home following a foul popup in front of the first base dugout. He scored from third after Oregon catcher Brett Hambright failed to cover home plate.
Doran scored again in the seventh on one of three hits by Tyler Gaffney. Doran walked with one out to begin the rally, before taking second on a ball in the dirt by reliever David Wylie. He scored from second on Gaffney's RBI single to make it 4-1.
Doran was the second injury replacement of the game, as Oregon starter Brandon Tessar (4-1) pitched to the first three batters of the second, before being relieved by Joey Housey. Housey's second pitch led to Stanford's early 2-0 lead.
NOTES: Kauppila originally injured himself by colliding into second baseman Kenny Diekroeger in the first inning on a groundout up the middle. He remained in the game, but after swinging in his only plate appearance, left with an 0-2 count... Stanford did not take batting practice on the field today, just in the cages... the home stand continues with San Jose State on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. and then Arizona State next weekend starting on Friday.
