REDWOOD SHORES, Calif. - Ninth-ranked Stanford men's rowing dropped three races to No. 4 California at The Big Row at Redwood Shores Saturday.
The Cardinal will return to action in two weeks at the Pac-12 Championships in Gold River, Calif. on Sunday, May 13.
"A great day of crew racing and celebration," said men's rowing head coach Craig Amerkhanian. "Our alumni who are vying for the U.S. Olympic Men's Eight made an appearance- Silas Stafford '09, David Banks '05 and Jake Cornelius '05 were cheering the Cardinal on."
"Our men showed fight and promise. The frosh had their fastest time of the year at 6:11 which bodes well for the Pac-12 Championships, while the II Eight raced with Cal for 1,100 meters before being dropped. The varsity eight was steady the entire 2,000 meters, literally losing one second in each 500 to the Bears. We can continue to improve to reach our goal of an IRA Final."
The Cardinal I Eight battled its way down the 2,000-meter course against the Golden Bears, but dropped the race by four seconds with a time of 5:41.7 to California's 5:37.6.
In the II Eight race, California would claim the win with a time of 5:52.4 ahead of Stanford's 6:04.0.
The Frosh Eight race would also go California's way, as the Cardinal's time of 6:11.6 was 26 seconds back of California's winning time of 5:45.2.
