Sprinters Shine on the Final Day of the Stanford Invitational

STANFORD, Calif. - Saturday was the sprinters chance to shine and the Cardinal came up big as the Stanford Invitational concluded at Cobb Track and Angell Field. Stanford won both the men's and women's 4x100-meter relays and Kori Carter took the 100-meter hurdles as the Cardinal had several top performances.

Carter had a busy day, winning the open 100-meter hurdles, while also competing in both relays. Carter ran a time of 13.26 in the hurdles, while also teaming with Shataya Hendricks, Carissa Levingston and Katie Nelms to win the 4x100 meters. The winning relay team ran a time of 44.56, which ranks seventh in Stanford history.

Stanford also ran well in the 4x400 meters as the Cardinal `A' team ran a season best. The team of Joy O'Hare, Kellie Schueler, Carter and Arantxa King combined for a time of 3:39.10 to finish second to only Arizona.

Levingston also ran well in the open 200 meters, finishing second in the timed final with a time of 23.78. Levingston was just ahead of Hendricks who was third in 23.96. Angela Gradiska also finished in the top 10, placing ninth with a time of 24.49.

In the middle distances, Stanford was led by Joy O'Hare who placed seventh in the timed final with a time of 2:06.53. She was just off her personal best, but still a very good time for this point in the season. Alli Billmeyer also ran well, making her outdoor debut at the distance. The freshman finished with a time of 2:10.39.

In the field, the Cardinal were led by Katerina Stefanidi who places second in the pole vault. Stefanidi cleared 13-7 ¼ to finish just ahead of teammates Katherine Zingheim and Ellie McCardwell. Both cleared 12-7 ½, but finished third and fifth based on misses.

The Cardinal men also fared well in the sprints, winning the 4x100-meter relay. Stanford won in a photo finish as Stanford outleaned American River as both were given a time of 40.75, but Stanford won on hundredths. Spencer Chase gave Stanford the victory with his lean as he was teamed with Darian Brooks, Colin Hepburn and Amaechi Morton.

In the middle distances, Luke Lefebure ran a collegiate best with a time of 1:50.14. Lefebure, just a freshman, finished 15th in the timed final against some elite competition.

Lefebure also teamed with Kevin Cardey, Morton and Patton Jones in the 4x400 meters to finish seventh in 3:14.09.

Morton was fourth in the open 200 meters, nearly missing his personal best with a time of 21.35. Hepburn also fared well, placing seventh with a time of 21.51, while Chase was not far back in 21.64. Both the times for Hepburn and Chase were personal bests.

Finally, Morton ran the final of the 110-meter hurdles, placing third with a time of 14.33.

In the field Stanford got good efforts in the triple jump from Brooks and Jones. Brooks was 11th with a mark of 47-6 ½, while Jones finished with a mark of 47-1.

In the pole vault, Corey Dysick placed ninth with a mark of 16-2 ¾.

The Cardinal will be back in action next Saturday, April 14, when it takes on California in the 118th running of the Big Meet.
