Cardinal Drop 8-5 Game at San Jose State

SAN JOSE, Calif.-- Austin Wilson and Jake Stewart drove in all five runs, with three home runs, but San Jose State (21-19) defeated visiting No. 7-ranked Stanford (28-12) 8-5 on a warm Tuesday afternoon.

Wilson homered twice, driving in three, while Stewart added a two-run homer, as the Spartans swept the season series.

Stanford's first three pitchers gave up eight runs on 10 hits, as SJSU built an 8-5 lead through five innings.

Starter John Hochstatter faced just four batters, giving up three runs on three hits, before Dean McArdle (3-1) gave up three runs over the next 3.1 innings. Garrett Hughes then gave up another two runs over the next 1.2 innings. Hughes did strike out a career-best four.

Wilson's two-run shot in the second, cut the SJSU lead to 3-2 in the second, before the Cardinal tied it at 4-4 in the fourth. A four-run fourth against McArdle and Hughes gave the Spartans the lead back at 8-4.

Wilson connected again in the fifth, hitting a solo shot to center to make it 8-5.

Stewart in his first start since April 14, also hit a two-run homer, tying it at 2-2 in the fourth.

The third of seven Spartan pitchers, Kyle Hassna (2-0) gave up three runs in 2.0 innings for the win.

Mike Aldrete, the son of the former Stanford major leaguer, pitched a scoreless eighth, before Kalei Contrades picked up his third save, despite two pinch-hit singles in the ninth.

NOTES: It was the second two-homer game of the season for the Cardinal, as Alex Blandino homered twice against Arizona State two weeks ago... after 152-straight starts in the field (every game of his career), Stephen Piscotty started at designated hitter... Mark Appel, and Stephen Piscotty remain on the Golden Spikes Award watch list for national player of the year, as the 60-man midseason list was released today... the Cardinal are at Oregon State this weekend with games on Friday at 5:30 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday at 1 p.m. Saturday's game is on Root TV (DirectTV 687, Dish 426).
