STANFORD, Calif. -- - Stanford Provost John Etchemendy has asked Patrick Dunkley, deputy director of athletics, to serve as interim Athletic Director over the summer months after Athletics Director Bob Bowlsby departs in June 15 to lead the Big 12 Conference.
Dunkley joined Stanford Athletics in spring 2011 after nearly a decade in the Office of the General Counsel, where he handled athletics among other legal matters. Within Athletics, Dunkley has been responsible for human resources, NCAA, Pac-12 and institutional compliance and legal affairs.
Etchemendy has also appointed co-chairs for the director search process: Robert Simoni, Donald Kennedy Chair in the School of Humanities and Sciences and professor of biology, and Jeff Wachtel, senior assistant to the president. The university anticipates announcing a new athletics director by September.
The Department of Athletics, Physical Education and Recreation supports 35 varsity sports as well as campus-wide recreation, fitness and wellness programs.
