ATHENS, Ga.- The opening day of the 2012 NCAA Men's and Women's Singles Championships featured five Stanford players in action, with three advancing into the second round.
On the men's side, Bradley Klahn advanced with a 7-5, 6-3 victory over Virginia's Jarmere Jenkins while Ryan Thacher was upended by Texas Tech's Gonzalo Escobar 6-3, 7-6 (5).
Klahn will next face Fresno State's Remi Boutillier on Thursday at 9:30 a.m. PT.
For the women, Nicole Gibbs and Mallory Burdette won their first round matches while Stacey Tan fell short. The tournament's No. 3 seed, Gibbs cruised past Virginia's Emily Fraser 6-0, 6-2 while the tournament's No. 5 seed, Burdette easily handled South Carolina State's Maria Craciun 6-1, 6-1. Tan dropped a 7-5, 6-2 decision to Rice's Natalie Beazant.
In the second round, Gibbs will battle Florida's Joanna Mather at 8:30 a.m. PT while Burdette meets Washington's Denise Dy at 8 a.m. PT.
Meanwhile, the doubles competition also gets underway on Thursday.
