STANFORD, Calif.-- No. 11-ranked Stanford (37-16, 17-12 Pac-12) dropped its first Pac-12 series in nearly a month, falling to cross-bay rival California (29-24, 12-17 Pac-12) 15-5 on Saturday afternoon.
Cal got to Brett Mooneyham (7-5) in the second and fourth innings, as the lefthander gave up nine runs on 10 hits over 3.2 innings. After giving up four runs in the second, he gave up another five in the fourth after the Cardinal closed to 4-2.
Stanford's staff of eight pitchers combined to give up 15 runs on 17 hits, with six walks, two wild pitches, and three hit batters.
Stanford got two back in the second on a wild pitch and ensuing throwing error at catcher to cut the lead to 4-2.
Five hits and four runs in the second inning gave Cal a 4-0 lead. The Bears scored all of its runs with two outs. The Bears batted around again in the fourth, scoring four times to lead 9-2.
The Cardinal had won series at Utah and over Washington State the previous two weekends and won six of 10 Pac-12 series overall.
