STANFORD, Calif.-- Tyler Gaffney and Jake Stewart both homered and Stephen Piscotty (5-2) pitched 7.0 efficient innings as No. 11-ranked Stanford (38-16, 18-12 Pac-12) defeated California (29-25, 12-18 Pac-12) 5-3 on Sunday afternoon.
The Cardinal head into its 31st NCAA Regional as winners of nine of its last 11. Gaffney finished 3-for-5, while Stewart added a two-hit afternoon.
Piscotty pitched a career-best and efficient 7.0 innings, giving up single runs in the second, third and fourth innings, walking one and striking out two.
A three-run home run by Jake Stewart, his seventh, gave Stanford a 3-1 lead in the second off of starter Justin Jones. Jones lasted just 2.0 innings after picking up the save on Friday.
Tyler Gaffney homered in the fourth to make it 5-3.
