Stanford Opens Season at USF Invitational

SAN FRANCISCO -- Stanford opened the cross-country season at The USF Invitational in Golden Gate Park. The small meet gave the Cardinal a chance to test their summer training against mostly Bay Area competition.

The Cardinal men got off to a good start, sweeping the top four places. Tyler Stutzman led Stanford, finishing the 8,000-meter course 24:45.00. Michael Atchoo, Miles Unterreiner and Benjamin Johnson finished within a second of Stutzman. Riley Sullivan completed the Stanford scoring, finishing 10th with a time of 25:21.00.

Stanford finished with 19 points to beat California by 17 points. USF rounded out the top three team finishes.

On the women's side, Aisling Cuffe won the individual title, covering the 6,000-meter course in 17:08.00. Jessica Tonn placed third in 17:11.70, while Mary Kate Anselmini also had a top-10 finish, placing ninth in 17:57.90.

Completing the scoring for Stanford were Aimee Trujillo and Tate Murray. Trujillo placed 11th in 18:00.40, while Murray was 14th in 18:17.40.

The Cardinal women placed second as a team, while Cal won with a total of 32 points. Stanford had 35 points, while Cal State Stanislaus was third with 108.

Stanford will return to campus for a couple of days, before heading to Tahoe for the annual preseason training camp. The Cardinal will next race at the Stanford Invitation on September 29.
