CHARLESTON, S.C. -- Facing its first ranked opponent of the season, Stanford fell 2-0 to No. 22 Furman as part of the College of Charleston Tournament. The Cardinal outshot Furman 15-9 in the game, but lost for the second-straight contest.

"It was a day where I thought we did everything better than our opponent other than the most important thing, which is to score goals," said head coach Jeremy Gunn. "We played exciting soccer against a top-ranked team and had plenty of chances, but just couldn't get that goal."

The Cardinal fell to 1-2-0 after losing a pair of tough ones at the Charleston tournament.

The two teams played to a scoreless draw in the first half with Stanford outshooting the Paladins, 8-2. Forwards Adam Jahn and Bobby Edwards were active as Stanford forced the Furman goalkeeper into four first-half saves.

"We play fantastic in the first half and had our chances," said Gunn. "It's tough when you feel like you are outplaying your opponent, but can't score a goal."

After the break, Furman got on the board in the 49th minute. Coleton Henning found space in the middle of the field and blasted one from 25 yards. The shot beat Drew Hutchins to put the Paladins on the board.

"It was a fantastic strike and worthy of being the game winner," said Gunn.

Stanford fought hard for the rest of the half, creating chances, including seven more shots. Ty Thompson had perhaps Stanford's best chance, but his shot went just wide.

Furman put the game away in the 80th minute when Henning scored for a second time. This time, Henning headed the ball past Hutchins off a corner kick. It was the first corner of the game for Furman, while Stanford managed 10 for the contest.

"There were many great things for us on the field," said Gunn. "We just need to be able to score goals."

Stanford returns to campus for the week, but will be back out on the road next weekend when it faces another ranked opponent. The Cardinal will travel to take on No. 12 UC Irvine on Friday, Sept. 7, at 7 p.m.
