STANFORD, Calif. - The Stanford wrestling team dropped a 26-6 decision to 16th-ranked Michigan, Sunday, at Burnham Pavilion in Stanford, Calif. The Cardinal is now 3-2 overall this season, while the Wolverines improve to 4-1.
True freshman Peter Russo knocked off 19th-ranked Rossi Bruno, 9-4 in overtime, at 133 pounds in the final bout of the afternoon. The rookie registered two takedowns in the first period to take a 4-1 lead. After no scoring occurred in the second, Bruno scored a reversal in the third and forced overtime with 1:13 of riding time. In the extra period, Russo secured a takedown and then tallied three near fall points for the win.
Also picking up a win for the Cardinal was junior heavyweight Dan Scherer, who posted a 3-2 decision against Michigan's Justin Dozier. After a scoreless first period, Scherer chose down to start the second. He quickly picked up a reversal to take the lead. Dozier escaped to cut the lead to 2-1. Dozier tied it up with an escape in the third, but Scherer held 1:19 in riding time for the win.
The dual began at 141 pounds, where Michigan's Camryn Jackson recorded a 16-6 major decision over Stanford sophomore Josh Lauderdale. The Wolverines won the first seven bouts of the dual to hold a 23-0 advantage over the Cardinal.
Up next, Stanford travels to Columbia, Mo., to face South Dakota State and Missouri on Saturday, Nov. 24. The duals will begin at 10 a.m. PT in the Hearnes Center.
