Stanford Women Advance Two Boats To Finals In San Diego

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Stanford women's rowing advanced two of its four boats to their respective finals at the San Diego Crew Classic Saturday.

The I and II Eights qualified in heats and will compete Sunday for the Jessop-Whittier Cup and the Jackie Ann Stitt Hungness Cup, respectively.

The Four and Novice Eight both missed out on the finals, as the Four finished second in the third final and the Novice Eight sixth in the petite final Saturday afternoon.

The I Eight grabbed the third and last qualifying spot for the Jessop-Whittier Cup in the first heat Saturday, crossing the line in a time of 6:44.197. It was a hotly-contested heat, as the Cardinal, in third place, was separated from heat winner Washington by 0.79 of a second.

The final will take place at 9:25 a.m. Sunday morning, pitting Stanford against four Pac-12 teams in Washington, California, USC and UCLA, as well as Virginia.

The II Eight booked its spot in the Jackie Ann Stitt Hungness by winning the third heat of the competition in a time of 6:51.98, nearly three seconds faster than runner-up USC. Sunday's final, pitting Stanford against USC, California, UCLA, Washington and Virginia, is set for 9:50 a.m.

In the Karen Plumleigh Cortney Cup competition, the Stanford Four took fifth in its heat, missing out on a spot in the final. The Cardinal's time of 7:58.01 was just over 15 seconds back of heat winner Tennessee. The Four was relegated to the third final in the afternoon, where it took second with a time of 7:48.03, just under 11 seconds behind USC B.

The Novice Eight also failed to qualify for its final, finishing third with a time of 7:24.44 in the first heat of the Laurel V. Korholz Perpetual Trophy competition's opening heat. Moving on to the petite final later in the afternoon, the Cardinal finished sixth in a time of 7:24.99.
