SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - No. 1 Stanford opened its first day at the UCSB Winter Invite Saturday with wins of 19-1 and 9-4 over No. 18 Cal Baptist and No. 6 UC Irvine, respectively, in Santa Barbara.
Freshmen Kaitlyn Lo, Melissa Seidemann each netted three goals over the two wins.
Stanford will conclude its trip Sunday with contests against No. 8 Loyola Marymount at 9:10 a.m. and CSU Bakersfield at 12:40 p.m.
Opening up road action in the morning, the Cardinal wasted little time jumping all over Cal Baptist, scoring five first-period goals on the way to a 13-0 halftime lead. Cal Baptist would get its only goal in the third period, but Stanford would net three goals in each of the final two periods to complete the victory.
Yelizarova scored six times in the victory to lead the Cardinal. Steffens also scored the first three goals of her collegiate career while Lo, Kaley Dodson and Alexis Lee, Lexie Ross and Kelsey Suggs added a goal apiece to the win.
Sophomore Emily Dorst got the start and went the distance in the morning, making two saves.
Hours later, the Cardinal was back in the water to face the sixth-ranked Anteaters. After taking a 3-1 lead within the opening eight minutes, Stanford clung to its advantage over the next two periods while the Anteaters refused to go away. UC Irvine cut the deficit to one at halftime, but the Cardinal defense would stand up to the rally, allowing just one more Anteater goal over the second half.
The Cardinal added a goal in the third period then outscored the Anteaters 4-1 over the final eight minutes to claim its third victory of the season.
Seidemann scored three times in the win, Neushul and Steffens netted two apiece while Lo and Catherine Carpenter each found the back of the cage once.
Senior goalie Kate Baldoni got the call in the nightcap, making nine saves to anchor the defensive effort.
