STANFORD, Calif. - The 20th-ranked Stanford softball team run-ruled Cal State Northridge, 8-0 in five innings, and CSU Bakersfield, 12-0 in five innings, Saturday, in the Stanford Nike Invitational at Smith Family Stadium. The Cardinal improves to 9-2 overall, while Matadors fell to 3-8 overall and Roadrunners dropped to 0-6.
Freshman pitcher Kelsey Stevens notched the win in the circle against Cal State Northridge, moving to 4-1 overall. She allowed just one hit and tallied five strikeouts in her second straight shutout. Senior Teagan Gerhart earned the win against CSU Bakersfield, improving to 5-1. Mia Pagano (1-3) took the loss for the CSUN, while Sydney Raeber (0-1) was the losing pitcher for Roadrunners.
Against Cal State Northridge, Stanford scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning. With the bases loaded, sophomore Hanna Winter scored on a wild pitch. Freshman designated player Kayla Bonstrom drew a walk with the bases loaded to score sophomore Leah White. Freshman Jessica Plaza then singled to left field, scoring senior Sarah Hassman.
A five-run outburst by the Cardinal in the bottom of the fifth inning ended the game early as the run-rule went into effect. Hassman led off the inning and reached on an error by CSUN second baseman Tiffini Lucero. With runners on first and second, Bonstrom ripped a double to left field, scoring Hassman and pinch runner Alyssa Lombardo. Right fielder Cassandra Roulund then hit a triple to right field, scoring pinch runners Tylyn Wells and Corey Hanewich. Freshman second baseman Kaitling Schaberg ended the game with a single to left field, scoring Roulund.
Stanford wasted no time getting on the scoreboard against CSU Bakersfield in the second game of the day. The Cardinal scored six runs on three hits, while the Roadrunners committed one error. Senior short stop Jenna Rich hit triple to right centerfield, scoring White and Hassman. A sacrifice fly by Bonstrom brought Rich home to make the score 3-0 in favor of the Cardinal.
Still in the bottom of the first inning, Stanford designated player Danielle Miller reached on a throwing error by CSUB second baseman Adianna Cardoza. That led to a two-run triple by Roulund and an RBI triple by senior second baseman Tegan Schmidt.
The Cardinal finished off the Roadrunners with a six-run fourth inning. Bonstrom drove in the first run on an RBI single with the bases loaded. Wells, the designated player, then reached on a fielder's choice to score Rich, but an error by short stop Shay Fryer kept the bases loaded for the Cardinal. Roulund then hit her second triple of the game, bringing home Erin Ashby, Bonstrom and Wells. Schmidt plated Roulund with a single to left centerfield for the final run of the inning.
The Cardinal wraps-up the Stanford Nike Invitational on Sunday, Feb. 17 against UC Davis. First pitch is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
