No. 1 Stanford Sweeps Into UCI Invite Semifinal

Feb. 23, 2013

UCI Invitational Day One Scores

STANFORD, Calif. - Day One of the UCI Invitational went just as planned for top-ranked Stanford Saturday as the Cardinal swept CSU Bakersfield and No. 8 Hawai'i at Corona del Mar High School.

Stanford (11-0) opened the day with a 12-4 win over CSU Bakersfield then downed the Rainbow Wahine, 13-5, to advance to Sunday's semifinal round to face No. 5 Arizona State at 10:30 a.m. at Anteater Aquatics Complex.

Both of Saturday's wins followed the same theme: Stanford jumps out to big first-half lead, defense does away with any hope opponent has of clawing back into the contest. Against the Roadrunners in the tournament opener, the Cardinal scored five times in the second period to open up an 8-2 lead by halftime. The Roadrunners would score only twice in the second half, with none of the goals coming in the fourth period as the Cardinal defense prevented CSU Bakersfield from seriously threatening the large lead.

Junior two-meter and one of Stanford's three 2012 U.S. gold medalists Annika Dries made her 2013 debut, scoring twice against the Roadrunners. Jillian Garton, Kaitlyn Lo, Melissa Seidemann and Maggie Steffens each added a brace while Kiley Neushul and Gurpreet Sohi added a goal apiece to the win.

In the cage, freshman Gabby Stone got the start and made nine saves over three periods of work, with sophomore Emily Dorst making two saves in the final period.

Stanford's defense outdid itself in the first half of the afternoon game, holding the Rainbow Wahine scoreless as the Cardinal offense built up a 7-0 lead. Hawai'i would get on the board with two goals in the third frame but the Cardinal posted its own crooked number, scoring four times to put things out of reach at 11-2 en route to the 13-5 win.

Seidemann posted a hat trick with three goals to lead the way for Stanford. Dries, Neushul, Steffens and Cory Dodson each added two goals while Alexis Lee and Anna Yelizarova filled out the remainder of the scoresheet with individual goals.

In the cage No. 1 goalie Kate Baldoni started and made five saves in the opening half before giving way to Stone, who stopped three shots, and Dorst, who made a save, for the final two periods.
