STANFORD, Calif. - Stanford outfielder Cassadra Roulund talks about the team's favorite on-the-bus activity in this edition of her blog. The sophomore will be blogging all season long to give Cardinal fans a behind-the-scenes look at the team.
Hey, hey, hey!
As you may or may not remember, in a past blog, Plaza mentioned something called `spotlight'. For those of you who are not accustomed to the intricacies of `spotlight', it's essentially a one-woman-show on our bus either to or from a game. The lucky star of the show puts in her headphones and turns up the volume until she can't hear her own voice, and then proceeds to perform a song for the rest of the team.
Stanford softball decided to kick it up a notch by turning `spotlight' into more of a team bonding riff-off. The name of the game in a riff-off is to try to start a new song with a word from the previous song. (watch the movie Pitch Perfect if you need a good example).
The bus ride to the Ontario airport from Cathedral City was filled with our very own riff-off. Complete with interesting and comedic shifts of genres from Sir Mix-a-Lot to Alicia Keys and back to Marvin Gaye.
Major props to LoDo [Lauren Donovan] who managed to save the riff-off multiple times with her vast knowledge and memory bank of random songs.
Although our coaches may not have enjoyed the sound of our lovely (if I do say so myself) voices echoing up and down our bus for an hour and a half... we all had a fantastic time. I proudly stand by my assertion (via Twitter) that Stanford softball could form an a capella team if ever needed.
All singing aside, because okay maybe we aren't nearly as good at singing as we are at playing softball, I am so very thankful for my team. It's the bonding moments that occur not only on the field, but off the field that make Stanford softball so unique and such an incredible team to be part of.
Anyway, I hope you guys all tuned in this weekend to our tournament in Cathedral City. We had a great time despite the chilly, windy conditions. We even got to shower at the end of our trip instead of heading straight to the airport!
Fun fact - last year, we were pretty rushed and part of our team ended up on the plane with conditioner still in their hair. Ever since then, it's been a running joke that we wouldn't be able to shower in Palm Springs this year. But alas! Our team was clean and smelling fresh on our flight home.
Inspirational Quote of the Week: "In the end, it's the extra effort that separates a winner from second place. But winning take a lot more than that, too. It starts with complete command of the fundamentals. Then it takes desire, determination, discipline, and self-sacrifice. And finally, it takes a great deal of love, fairness and respect for your fellow man. Put all these together, and even if you don't win, how can you lose?" - Jesse Owens
Standout Teammate of the Week: Alyssa Lombardo. BARDO! She did a phenomenal job at the plate this weekend. Slapping like it's nobody's business!
Until we meet again,
Boo
P.S. - I would highly recommend following @StanfordSball on Twitter and `liking' us on Facebook! Good stuff, good stuff.
