Stanford Splits on Second Day of Kajikawa Classic

TEMPE, Ariz. - The No. 20/21 Stanford softball team split its two games, Friday, at the Kajikawa Classic in Tempe, Ariz. The Cardinal fell 6-0 to second-ranked Oklahoma in its first game of the day, but bounced back to defeat Portland State, 3-1. Stanford is now 2-1 overall.

Sophomore Erin Ashby led the Cardinal on Friday with two hits and two RBI. Sophomore Leah White added a bunt single, sacrifice fly and a run scored. Sophomore Hanna Winter finished with a triple and a run scored.

Senior pitcher Teagan Gerhart picked up her first win of the season against Portland State. She allowed just one run and struck out nine batters in a complete game.

Against Oklahoma, Stanford gave up five runs in the first inning, all off of home runs, and was unable to generate any offense of its own. Freshman pitcher Kelsey Stevens entered the game in the second and limited the Sooners to just one run off of two hits. The rookie tallied seven strikeouts in 6.0 innings of play.

Versus Portland State, Stanford tallied a run in the top of the first inning to take the early lead. Winter led off with a triple to left centerfield. White brought her home with a sacrifice fly to right field.

The Cardinal tacked on another run in the top of the third inning. After senior Jenna Rich drew a walk with two outs, Ashby hit a single to left centerfield to score Rich.

A double down the left line by Ashby scored White from second to increase Stanford's lead to 3-0 in the fifth inning. Ashby now has four RBI on the season.

Portland State second baseman Carly McEachran hit a solo home run in the bottom of the seventh to avoid the shutout for the Vikings.

Up next, Stanford faces Cal Poly on Saturday, Feb. 9 at 10:30 a.m. PT and Indiana at 4 p.m. PT at the Tempe Sports Complex.
