FULLERTON, Calif. - The No. 15 Stanford softball team dropped a 7-6 decision to Iowa and was shut out 4-0 by Wisconsin, Friday, on the first day of the Easton Invitational in Fullerton, Calif. The Cardinal drops to 14-5 overall, while the Hawkeyes moved to 11-6 and the Badgers jump to 12-1.
Freshman Kelsey Stevens took the loss against Iowa, dropping to 8-2 on the year. She gave up five runs on two hits with two walks in 1.1 innings. Kayla Massey earned the win for Iowa, improving to 4-4. Against Wisconsin, senior Teagan Gerhart gave up three runs (only one earned) on three hits in 3.0 innings of work to fall to 6-3 on the year. Sophomore Nyree White threw the final four innings, allowing one run on four hits with two strikeouts. Cassandra Darrah earned the win, remaining undefeated at 8-0.
The Cardinal got on the board first against Iowa, scoring two runs in the bottom of the first inning. Senior Sarah Hassman got on base with an infield single and then scored from first as senior short stop Jenna Rich hit a double to right field. A throwing error by Iowa third baseman Michelle Zoeller scored Rich.
The Hawkeyes answered in the top of the second, capturing a 6-2 lead. Gerhart replaced Stevens with the bases loaded and one out, but Stevens was responsible for five of the six earned runs by Iowa.
Stanford got one back in the bottom of the second as sophomore Leah White singled to left field, scoring senior second baseman Tegan Schmidt from second.
The Cardinal scored two more runs in the third. Rich drew a walk to lead off the inning. Sophomore Cassandra Roulund singled to left field to put two on for Stanford. Freshman first baseman Kayla Bonstrom brought them both home with a double to right centerfield.
Massey pushed the Hawkeye lead back up to two with a solo home run to lead off the top of the fifth inning. The Cardinal got it back in the bottom of the sixth as Rich singled through the right side, scoring sophomore Hanna Winter, but that would be the last run of the game for Stanford.
Against Wisconsin, the Badgers jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning. First baseman Shannel Blackshear hit a double that was just fair down the left field line, scoring Mary Massei and Stephanie Peace.
The Badgers added runs in the third and sixth inning on two RBI singles by Tayor-Paige Stewart and Maria Van Abel, respectively.
Stanford will continue the Easton Invitational on Saturday, March 2 against host Cal State Fullerton at 11:15 a.m. and Northwestern at 3:45 p.m.
