SAN ANTONIO, Texas - The Stanford fencing team claimed its best result since 2008, earning an eighth place finish Sunday at the NCAA Championships.
Freshman Vivian Kong highlighted the Cardinal’s performance Sunday, earning first-team All-America honors after finishing tied for third in women’s epee. Kong notched 17 victories but fell just short of the finals, losing to Princeton’s Susannah Scanlan 15-10 in the semifinal round.
Stanford entered the day in seventh place after the conclusion of the men's competition Friday and rounds 1-3 of the women’s tournament on Saturday. The scores of the men's and women's competitions are combined to determine a team's ranking.
Francesca Bassa earned second-team All-America honors after compiling 16 victories and finishing seventh in women’s epee.
Four Stanford fencers garnered All-America honors at this year’s championships with men’s foilists Turner Caldwell and national champion Alexander Massialas earning recognition during the men’s competition.
The future looks bright for the Cardinal with all 11 of its fencers that competed at the NCAA Championships expected to return in 2014.
