March 25, 2013

STANFORD, Calif. - The Stanford sailing team went 11-3 to win the 2013 Aaron Szambecki Team Race hosted by Old Dominion this past weekend. The Cardinal went 5-2 in round, one capped off by a 6-1 mark to close the event, finishing ahead of second-place College of Charleston (10-4) for top honors.

Stanford was represented at the event by skippers Mateo Vargas, Oliver Toole and Kevin Laube along with crews Tally Buckstaff, Haley Kirk and Kelly Ortel.

The win came just days after Sailing World released its college rankings, with Stanford finding itself in the No. 3 slot of the coed poll behind top-ranked Yale and Georgetown. Stanford was ninth in the women's poll.

The Cardinal shelved three top-five finishes on the East Coast to cap off an event-filled few days for the program.

Stanford was fifth at the Boston Dinghy Cup Challenge with 328 points behind Boston College (269), MIT (294), Brown (298) and Roger Williams (308).

Kieran Chung-Wolf and Yuri Namikawa were ninth in the A-Division with 152 points.

Finishing just behind Boston College (73) in the B-Division was the duo of Hans Henken and Samantha Steele with 79 points. In the C-Division, Antoine Screve and Rebecca King were third.

The Cardinal women were fourth at the Duplin Women's Team Race hosted by Tufts. The tandems included Sally Mace and Katie Riklin, Yuki Yoshiyasu and Helena Scutt, and Molly McKinney and Natalie Urban. Stanford went 6-8 as Yale (12-2) won the event.

Stanford was seventh at UC Santa Barbara's South 5 Designate with 179 points. Washington (90) was first among the 26 teams. Stanford tallied 96 points for seventh in the A-Division and 83 points for ninth in the B-Division.
